Which Battery is Better for Solar: Lead-Acid or Lithium Ion?

Following are some of the key considerations for selecting the type of battery for usage during peak time and power outages:

  • Depth of Discharge (DoD): % of battery capacity that can be used without permanent damage (reduced DoD means more batteries for the same capacity)
  • Round Trip Efficiency: Useful capacity due to losses in charging and discharging
  • Charging / discharging time
  • Size: Space required for battery (function of energy density (watt-hr/Kg)
  • Loss of charge if not used regularly
  • Volatile gases
  • Weight
  • Battery Management System (BMS): electronic system to manage battery charging and other functions
  • Up front cost
  • Life / Warranty
  • Life cycle cost
  • There parameters are compared below for Lead-Acid and Li Ion (LFP) Batteries
